Scar Treatments

If your scars are bothersome, we can help.

Scars can be aesthetically unpleasant and make people self-conscious. In some cases, they can also create physical pain such as severe itching and discomfort.

There are a number of factors that affect scarring, including blood supply, skin tone color, and thickness of your skin, depth, location or size of the original wound. Your age, ethnicity, and genetics are all considerations when considering getting scar treatment.

You will need to wait at least 3 months after surgery before getting a scar treatment. Our goal is to minimize your scar and make it as inconspicuous as possible and have it blend in with your surrounding skin tone.

Consultation
A consultation is crucial before any scar treatment. You are unique, your scars are unique: we must consider the characteristics of your scar and your skin type. Together, we will determine whether you will need more than one treatment to remove or reduce your scar. If you are a smoker, it is important that you quit at least two weeks before a treatment. You will need to stop taking aspirin and medications that are known to delay healing as well as skin care products that contain glycolic or retinoic acid. We will go over all the details during your consultation.

Together, we can come up with a treatment that will work best for you, aligning with your expectations. The goal is to help you not feel self-conscious and to improve and resolve an issue that has likely been bothering you for a long time.

Types of Scars & Treatments
  • Acne Scars: These types of scars can fluctuate from deep pores to angular punctures in the skin. The right procedure depends on your type of acne scars. Laser resurfacing and/or microneedling may be considered, as well as chemical peels.

  • Hypertrophic Scars: Similar to keloid scars, they are also thick and red but the difference is that hypertrophic scars tend to stay within the wound or incision area. Sometimes, we need to remove the excess scar tissue with a scar revision.

  • Keloid Scars: These types of scars are red or dark in color, in a thick cluster, and growing beyond the edges of the incisions often over the breastbone or on the earlobes or shoulders. The problem is collagen is still being produced by the body after a wound has healed.

Types of Procedures
  • Laser Resurfacing: Using laser treatments, we resurface the scar, in effect “sanding down” a raised scar and reducing redness in a single or series of treatments.

  • Microneedling: With this technique, we make thousands of pinpricks with a pen to reduce the thickness of the scar and allow for new collagen growth.

  • Chemical Peels: Chemical peels may be used to exfoliate varying layers of your skin. This will reduce the appearance of some types of scarring and associated pigmentation.

Silkki: Silicone Scar Therapy
I formulated Silkki, a medical-grade silicone scar gel, to improve the appearance of all scars in all skin tones at all time points. This product is suitable for even the most sensitive skin and forms a permeable silicone sheet after drying. Silkki hydrates, softens and protects your scar and aids in scar maturation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Am I a candidate for scar treatment?
If you are bothered by a scar, in good physical health, a non-smoker and do not have active acne or other skin diseases, you are a good candidate for scar revision.

What are the risks?
Scar treatment is a safe procedure that can include minor risks such as a reaction to anesthesia, bleeding, change in skin sensation, delayed healing, infection, recurrence of an unsightly scar or skin discoloration and contour irregularities. I pride myself on safety and I take every precaution possible to get you the results you deserve.

Recovery

We care! We’ll take care of you, not only at your procedure but also during your entire recovery. We use silicone strips after surgery, and also provide you with silicone gel to massage the healing incision.  We are here on the other end of a 24/7 call line (not a call center, just us) if you need any information or assistance. Here are a few things that will help you during your recovery:

  • You will likely feel some pain after your procedure and medication can be prescribed for your discomfort
  • Keep your wound clean
  • Keep your silicone bandages on until told otherwise
  • Do not scratch at your incisions
  • Use our silicone scar gels for massage as directed
  • Scar massage is critical and will soften and flatten your scar as you heal.
  • A silicone gel adhesive is often applied after surgery
  • Make sure to use sunscreen to prevent hyperpigmentation
