Breast implants are not permanent implants. While many women have breast implants that will last for their entire lifetime, there is a real possibility that additional procedures will be required.
I generally quote a re-augmentation rate of about 20% within a 10 year period. There are a number of reasons why women proceed with additional breast implant surgery but the most common reason is for size increase by the patient. Accordingly, it is crucial to select breast implants based on critical breast measurements and patient tissue requirements, in addition to patient requests for size.
Other reasons for reaugmentation relate to complications with breast implants, namely rupture and capsular contracture (scarring) around the breast implant.
It is crucial that each patient seeks consultation from a board certified plastic surgeon with experience in breast augmentation in order to achieve the most desirable and lasting results.
