Any patient with large breasts is a candidate for breast reduction. The only concerns for a breast reduction are a previous history of cancer or previous breast surgery. Even in those cases, a breast reduction can still be performed. Fibrocystic disease is common, and breast reduction actually can remove large amounts of cystic breast tissue. IN FACT, a breast reduction actually decreases your risk of developing breast cancer by removing breast tissue! Think of it as a partial cosmetic mastectomy! Mammograms are ordered prior to your breast reduction surgery just to make sure that everything is OK.
